Marc Lauwers already made the mistake of taking off full throttle years ago and it will not happen again. The Belgian, the title defender in the SSV class, has enough experience to understand that the Morocco Desert Challenge is a matter of stamina for eight days. “Don’t get me wrong: I’m eager to start. I am really looking forward to it and I am happy we can start now. However, I do not have to win stages to win the race. Let others make the mistakes. Our strategy is to have a constant pace. After all it is about the best average.”
Lauwers’ winning SSV has not changed much, but still is improved and better prepared. “We got quite some weight off”, says Lauwers, who himself lost 45 kilos over the years. “We gained in the details. The cage for example is much lighter. We simply looked at what is needs at minimum. That is good enough. Sometimes less is more.”
